Maps can distort. Area ratios do not.
Flat world maps stretch some places—especially near the poles. This comparison avoids map-projection distortion by sizing two circles according to their land area. Circle area, not diameter, carries the comparison.
The search includes 215 countries and economies with reported values in the World Bank’s Land area (sq. km) series for 2023. Land area excludes inland water bodies, so it may differ from a country’s commonly quoted total surface area.

What exactly is being compared?
Land area in square kilometres. Oceans, territorial waters, and inland water bodies are not included.
Why does another website show a different number?
It may use total surface area, include water, use a different territorial definition, or reflect a later statistical revision.
Are the circles geographically shaped?
No. They are proportional area symbols, designed to compare scale without pretending to show national borders.
